TYPES OF IELTS TESTS

IELTS ACADEMIC

Listening

The listening section has four parts with ten questions each. Responses follow the order of the recording, which includes British, North American, New Zealand, and Australian accents. Sections 1 and 2 focus on everyday social situations, while Sections 3 and 4 cover educational and academic scenarios.

• Time: Approximately 30 minutes + 10 minutes to transfer answers

Academic Reading

Texts are sourced from books, journals, magazines, newspapers, and online resources, suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate students. They include narrative, descriptive, or argumentative styles, with diagrams or graphs where necessary.

• Sections: 3
• Questions: 40
• Marking: Each correct answer = 1 mark; final score is band 1–9 (e.g., 4, 6.5)

Academic Writing

Two tasks must be completed. Task 1: describe visual data (graphs, tables, charts) in 150 words (~20 minutes). Task 2: discuss a point of view or argument in 250 words (~40 minutes). Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1 in scoring.

Speaking

The Speaking test is a personal interview with an examiner, recorded for assessment. It has three parts:

• Part 1: Questions about personal topics (home, family, studies, hobbies)
• Part 2: Talk on a given topic for 1–2 minutes after 1-minute preparation
• Part 3: Discussion on the topic from Part 2
• Time: 12–15 minutes
